"Ben Jacobs may or may not have a psychiatric disorder. Judging by the content of MBGATE the contents of his head must be all over the map. At some times this album sounds like Prince and at others it sounds like Squarepusher covering Ween's Pure Guava, but it always sounds incredibly catchy. The album is filled with drum programming and genre-hopping that you'd never expect to be put together, but never does it sound forced for the sake of being weird. It sounds more like Ben Jacobs simply thought, "This Nintendo Rock intro would really go great with a Rick Springfield riff." And he was right. This album has singing on all but one track, and the lyrics keep you guessing. When he sings "Just six seconds in your presence makes me feel upset...that I've only known you for six seconds yet." he captures exactly the way you'll feel soon after hearing MBGATE."

"Hmmm, i bought this, and i'll take a few tracks from this for mixtapes, but the album as a whole flops. Other reviewers said his other album is better, I dont know, I havent heard it.
Lights, labial, and lysine are good tracks, the other stuff aims high and misses.
Lights reminds me of quasimodo
labial reminds me of tipsy
and lysine reminds me of they might be giants
So its pretty wild on the influences, and the sound is full of variety, but the other tracks are let downs. They try but don't have the fun and cohesive sound of these tracks. I like the videogame sounds, but the album doesn't use them on more than 2 or 3 tracks."

"this is a wonderfully catchy and inventive album. it's pop that's done in a very weird, meticulous and charming way. and the lyrics are great. the guy is obviously very talented and more people should know about him. my favorite tracks are 'lysine', 'labial' and 'lights', even though they're all gems."
