"this is the first Mayhem album i've ever owned, and i picked it up based entirely on the history of the band, history involving their first singers suicide, the stabbings within band members, burning churches down, and other murders connected to the band over the years. They sounded like the most metal band to ever have walked this earth (in a more pop-culture Dethklok sense), so i picked up this album expecting the blackest of black metal that would explode my bowels and eat my face off. I got so much more.

Yes, there are all the blood freezing screams and growls with the crushing sludge guitar and blast beats on the drums, but Mayhem has proven to me that they are not just another doom metal band. The album also contains some interesting ambient tracks, some spoken verses, some semi-powermetal screaming and even, most surprisingly, some industrial feel with programed beats and a slow dance floor feel, and some strange techno distortion on some of the vocals. This album is definitely worth checking out, and i suggest that you do."
