CD Reviews

Mayhem-- a band for the mature
Burritoman "USA" | Pennsylvania | 05/13/2002
(5 out of 5 stars)

"I love Mayhem. They are, in my estimation, the greatest metal band of all time, of any genre. They write magnificent songs which stir very real emotions. It is extremely rare in this media-obsessed plastic age for anyone to truly believe in what they represent professionally. Face it, in your work as well as in mine, we do what we have to do to get by and to succeed. That's reality as it is. We may grit our teeth and seethe over it, but we do it, we are basically phonies because of the system. Entertainers, however, are the biggest phonies of them all. They prostitute themselves on a radical basis for money and think nothing of it whatsoever. Not Mayhem. This is the one band I know of that actually lives and breathes their beliefs, and has also ceased breathing for the same beliefs. They are not, have never been, and will never be phonies. That is absolutely Mayhem's point. They represent rebellion in the extreme, freedom in the extreme. Mayhem are not the gothic fools they're made out to be by the media and the left. Nor are they the murderous extremists they're made out to be by the right. As far as I can tell, since 1993 Mayhem have been nothing but true individuals living out their views and beliefs through some of the very greatest music ever recorded, of which this cd is an essential part. And, by the way, noone does metal better than the true Mayhem."
Greatness!

"This is Mayhem's best live album, and one of the best black metal live albums ever. The sound quality is excellent, and Maniac does an excellent job as a frontman. The only complaint I have is the guest appearance from Attila (De Mysteris). He is great on De Mysteris, but can't sing worth a lick live. Otherwise a great live album, highly recommended!"
Hellhammer Rules

"As one of the more intriguing and exceptional Black Metal bands around, Mayhem are a band you demand high standards from, and it's delivered on this official live release. As expected, Hellhammer puts in a simply astonishing performance, his drum battery propelling the four piece forward and adding extra intensity to the already immensely powerful music. The music punishes your senses in the most perversely wonderful way, with tracks like I Am Thy Labyrinth and The Fall Of Seraphs in particular sounding particularly impressive. With around an hour's worth of material from an awesome show, it's a must have purchase, if only to hear how the untouchable drum God that is Hellhammer manages to not only match his studio material, but play it faster! This is the best live album that I have heard and I think it's an essential for any Mayhem fan. You will not be disappointed! Order it. Now!"
