Synopsis

As the title declares, pianist McCoy Tyner is matched here with two inspired and inspiring partners, a rhythm section that possesses a light touch and reserves of power. While Tyner has at times sounded like he's pulling a trio in his wake, that never happens here. Instead this trio touches on many of the usual postbop bases with a fresh vitality. The empathy is apparent from the opening "Trane-like," with bassist Stanley Clarke and drummer Al Foster creating a springy rhythmic backdrop that has Tyner's triphammer runs sounding like stones dancing across water. That scintillating performance extends to the standard "Will You Still Be Mine?" and the Afro-Cuban "Carriba," while the pianist takes an expansive view of the blues on his "Goin' Way Blues," mixing traditional and modernist approaches. Clarke is equally adroit, whether accompanying or soloing, playing acoustic or electric. He uses his electric bass sparingly, contributing infectiously funky slap bass to the first take of "I Want to Tell You 'Bout That" and a reverberant lead to his other original, "In the Tradition Of," a tuneful bossa nova that suggests Antonio Carlos Jobim. But it may be Foster who does the most to make this date as successful as it is. His drumming sparkles, and he prods and levitates the music without ever intruding. The results are deep in the tradition of the piano trio, and it's Tyner's finest outing in the form in many years. --Stuart Broomer

CD Reviews

An Energetic Outing
Karl W. Nehring | Ostrander, OH USA | 08/11/2009
(4 out of 5 stars)

"The title of this DSD-recorded (mastered down to standard 16-bit CD format) leaves no doubt that

this is a meeting of jazz all-stars, and each of the three leaves his mark upon the proceedings. McCoy Tyner rose to fame playing with John Coltrane back in the '60s, Stanley Clarke rose to fame accompanying pianist Chick Corea in the fusion group Return to Forever back in the '70s, and veteran drummer Al Foster seems to have been around forever, but for the sake of consistent chronological progression I will point out that he for a time provided rhythmic propulsion for Miles Davis's electric comeback band back in the '80s. These three gentlemen then got together back in the late '90s to make an album together, which Telarc released in the early '00s. None of these three musicians has a reputation for babying his instrument; as you might expect, this is an energetic outing in which all three musicians make a solid contribution.

Although there are covers of a few standards, most of the cuts are by Tyner; the opening cut, Tyner's "Trane-like," is nine minutes of pure jazzical joy, and cut nine, his rhythmic workout titled "Carriba," is bound to get you bouncin'. Tyner's piano sounds bigger than life (perhaps that is appropriate, actually), but other than that, the sound quality is superb."
SACD warning

"This is a 5 star album musically and the DSD edition sounds great. Warning is that if you order the Hybrid SACD version [to which this review is addressed] you will receive a DSD disc that is not SACD. The ASIN numbers do NOT make a difference. Maybe this is an issue between me and Amazon, but I have decided to keep the DSD version and eat the $ difference. If someone gets an actual SACD please add a comment."
