Highly original interpretation of Autumn Leaves
godaniel | Jerusalem Israel | 02/05/2001
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Autumn leaves is a beautiful ballad whose words were originally written in French by the well known poet - Jacques Prevert, with a beautiful interpretation by the French Chansonnier Ives Montand. For any serious artist this creates a challenge. He has to find a new and different approach to the tune. Miles Davis and Cannonball Adderley do just that: Miles' interpretation has a clear trade mark. The introduction suggests, that you're going to hear something different - right from the start -from what you're used to, if you happen to know various existing interpretations. And if the introduction didn't manage to put you in the right "state of mind" that this is Miles "talking" to you, then the trumpet's outcry in the 13th bar (just count 13 times '1 2 3 4') will have made Davis' intention clear. In the rest of the song he leads you smoothly to the ballad's main theme. ENJOY!"
Classic Davis, Adderley

(5 out of 5 stars)

"Most of the material on this album originally appeared on the Blue Note label under Cannonball Adderley's name as leader and under the title "Something Else". It features a great ensemble, with the front line of Adderley and Davis complemented by a great rhythm section of Hank Jones on piano, Ron Carter on bass and Art Blakey on drums. The group feels like a Miles Davis Quintet, and one gets the feeling of Davis' hand in the choice of songs and arrangements. "Autumn Leaves" is a stunner, a moody interpretation with great solos by Davis, Adderley and Jones. Equally fine is "Love for Sale", with gorgeous solos by all three. This is one of the best recordings of Adderley, and it is fine Miles as well. The feel is quite similar to the old Davis Quintet of the Prestige records era (Davis, Coltrane). The album got 5 stars in DownBeat magazine when it first came out, and it deserves every one of them. Well worth getting, should be essential for all Adderley fans as well as Davis fans."
