"I'm not too familiar with DJ Mekalek. I know he did some work with Sage Francis and worked on the Non Phixion album. Sadly enough, I'd never even heard of Time Machine (his group) and they formed right here in my hometown. From what I heard on the Live & Learn LP, he appears to be pretty versatile too. Not only does he scratch with precision, but the production (which is handled exclusively by Mek) is well structured, varied, and strong. There are mellow, laid back tracks.....boom bap tracks.....head nodders.... I'm tellin' you, Mek has range. Most of the guest appearances are made by "known unknown" rappers and it gives the album that edge that most mainstream albums lack. There are 20 tracks, so for me to list all the good ones would make for a pretty long review. Trust me when I tell you that a good 90% of the album is dope.
There isn't much wrong with this album. There are a few passable tracks here and there, but with 20 tracks, that should be expected. "Top Of The World", "Incredible Feeling", and "Running In Place" are the songs I'm talking about. They aren't wack, but I have to be in the mood for them. Otherwise, the album flows with no hitches whatsoever.
Live & Learn is an awesome album. It's filled with 20 tracks of outstanding hip hop that should appeal to any fan of rap music. I wasn't too familiar with Mekalek before hearing this, but I'll definitely be backtracking and getting the old stuff he's associated with as well as checking for new material. I recommend adding this to your hip hop collection.
