CD Reviews

LP #5 and Help was on it's way
A. Russo | Cambridge, MA United States | 08/16/2006
(4 out of 5 stars)

"This LP was released at the end of 1976 folling that years successful Better Days And Happy Endings which cracked the top 25 LP Chart. This was Arista's hope and helping Melissa's continued success. Changes included less Carole Bayer Sager collaborations {The title song and There's More Where That Came From (one of my favorite tracks here) } and more covers.

Melissa wrote 3 of the tunes Talking To Myself, Headlines and So's My Old Man. Headlines with it's Calypso beat is the highlight here. She attempts to rock out on Frankie Miller's A Fool In Love with passion and drama! She does tongue and chic Monkey See, Monkey Do written by Michael Franks. With a slight lyric change to comericalize the song for single release, Melissa refered to her fusin' and fighting love as "like me and you know who" as opposed to "Arabs and like Jews" . Neither Michael or Melissa had a big hit with their single in spite of either lyric! She cover's Steely Dan's Dirty Work which was the B-side to Be Somebody and either one could have been a hit. Both delivered smooth soul Melissa Manchester sound with current top 40 appeal. Last, but not least is the last song on the CD. A stange, almost 2 minute original classical sounding version of Singing From My Soul. Melissa recorded it again for her Don't Cry Out Loud LP in 1978 and added more lyrics and different arraingement."

"I am so glad that this company is finally releasing Melissa Manchester's wonderful work!!!

These CD's are as good now as they were in the 70's and 80's if not better!

She is one of the queens of Jewish soul!"
