Synopsis

Album Description
In what may be the strongest release yet from the Canadian Idol talent competition, 17-year-old Calgarian Melissa O'Neil has put together a collection of rock-heavy pop destined to bring forth comparisons her to American Idol counterpart, Kelly Clarkson, with similarities in their broad vocal ranges, as well as in their looks and song styles. Not bad company to keep, and Canada's first female Idol should embrace such praise. O'Neil's fusion of straight up rock and pop also evokes thoughts of fellow Canadians Bif Naked and Avril Lavigne, virtually guaranteeing her an enthusiastic teenage audience. That said, she has a strength and edge all her own; her vocal delivery on the dramatic tracks "Just Like January" and "Driving Blind" shows a confidence and conviction worthy of a far more seasoned performer. With the right songs and the pipes to back them up, O'Neil's appeal could go well beyond the teen audience, and her rapidly growing fan base seems to indicate that many Canadians are already on board. If this new Idol continues to find her own, unique sound, and doesn't get pushed into a fluffy pop mould, she could--and should--break through to the American market.

CD Reviews

1st female Canadian Idol delivers solid debut
opentuned | Saskatchewan, Canada | 12/20/2005
(3 out of 5 stars)

"Yes this was a largely pre-formed album, ready-made for whoever won the 2005 Canadian Idol competition, but doggoned if it doesn't work. As a guitar-driven pop album it certainly makes mincemeat out of the Hilarys, Lindsays, Simpsonettes, etc., and while some of the songs sound similiar to each other, none of it is embarrassing, a MAJOR statement regarding Idol albums, most of which are utter stinkers of the worst order. The production doesn't launch into overkill, the arrangements make sense, and most importantly, THE GIRL HAS SERIOUS PIPES! A pure natural vocalist with a lot ahead of her. There are at least three big singles on here, and the albums will only get better from here. A producer like John Shanks could put her through the roof, but this is a very promising start."

"I heard about this CD from other Kelly Clarkson fans and thought, hey, she sounds similar. I'll try it out.

Thank goodness I did!

Her voice is clear and pure and quite beautiful, perfect for the rock-pop songs. Some songs are a little overproduced, yes, but on the whole it's a really beautiful album. The ballads aren't too slow, the upbeat songs get your heart pumping. Her voice is really good. I had no idea she was only seventeen until I read the review here on Amazon! If you like Kelly Clarkson, then get Melissa O'Neil's album. Both are great singers and made fantastic albums."
"finally ready to be somebody with a story to tell."

"Remember this name folks. You are going to be hearing it a lot over the coming years. This girl has it all: personality, conviction, intelligence, uncanny ability to cause people to really-really like her, beauty and above all, stellar vocal talent.

This album takes dead aim at the mainstream top-40 pop radio market, much in the same genre as a Kelly Clarkson, who is likely her closest rival. However, from what I've heard Melissa is already the superior vocalist.

First the cons. This album was a rush produce and was recorded in little more than three weeks due to Sony/BMG's want to get Canadian Idol winner CD's out as soon as possible and in time for the Christmas rush. As such, there is some overproduction on some of the songs. A little more time, care and polish would have made this a great album. As it stands it is very good and that is attributable to Melissa's vocal performance which is unquestionably excellent.

I'll focus on what I consider to be the most important tracks on this album. Though it should be noted that many of them could likely be hits if released to radio and you will find your own personal preferences.

String Me Along:

My personal favourite. This track rocks and Melissa delivers her best vocal performance. There's just the right mix of angst and emotion in her voice.

Speechless

The big production number and a mega-hit in waiting. The folks at Sony/BMG surely have this one penciled in for popular radio release. The best moments come after the second chorus where instrumentation gives way to Melissa's beautiful vocals.

Alive

I consider this a bonus track as it was recorded and released prior to the album recording sessions. It is Melissa's first single and a top-ten hit in Canada (still rising on the charts at this writing).

Let It Go

The second single. Upbeat and catchy but with a clear positive message. Don't sweat the small stuff, let it go and move on. It'll grow on you and the beat will have you wanting to get off your seat.

Original Girl

This song and the message it portrays defines Melissa.. Be yourself. Don't be a follower and don't let others define who you should be. The girl anthem to end all girl anthems and another mega-hit in waiting.

Safe Place To Hide

Melissa's first attempt at song writing. It's simple and it's beautiful. A favourite among Melissa's devoted fans.

Six more songs round out the album and they won't disappoint. Truly astounding when you consider that all of this comes from a 17 year old with no prior recording experience and very little formal vocal training. This is a good record and Melissa will only get better. Let us all hope that Melissa is NEVER held Speechless!!"
