CD Reviews

Melora goes solo....! Or does she....?
Vanessa L. Strickland | olney, md United States | 12/18/2007
(4 out of 5 stars)

"I'm a huge Rasputina fan and I wanted to pick up this solo CD to see what Melora would do on her own.

Honestly, it's not entirely different from Rasputina, as she is the front woman and founder of the group, though I will say I still enjoy it very much. The tracks range from very clear, structured pieces ("Girl Lunar Explorer", "War Bots"), to more musically layered, chaotic-sounding pieces ("Sky Is Falling", "Krakatowa"). She really puts a lot of dulcimer into the tracks, which I love... and "Border Village" is your usual silly, mysterious, Rasputina-esque dialogue track with some nice background music to set the mood.

The Tom Petty cover, "American Girl," is a spectacular take, as most Rasputina/Melora Creager covers tend to be.

If you're just becoming interested in Rasputina, I would recommend one of their albums first, like "How We Quit The Forest" or "Cabin Fever." Save this CD for later, unless you're open and willing to hear some crazy sounding stuff. For those who are more familiar with their work, this is definitely a nice addition to the collection."
Oh perilous world leftovers
Ian Brunner | Dallas, TX | 10/21/2008
(3 out of 5 stars)

"This album sounds like the leftovers that didn't make it to "oh perilous world". It is very good, but short and doesn't really stand on its own. If you're a fan of Rasputina, definitely pick it up- it will fit right in."
