"This CD proves what fans who've seen the band live already know: Melt-banana are the most massive sounding crew in the world! 'Charlie' also proves that self-production is the best route for many artists. (rant: Steve Albini-the Todd Rundgren of the 80s-completely neutered their sound with his patented tinny, angry mosquito sound. His style is useful if you have a drum-heavy and bass-less sound and you want to appear angry; otherwise, it's worse than useless...just ask P.J. Harvey). The sound on 'Charlie' is so unlike their first couple of CDs that many might believe that they've improved musically; in fact, they're just better recorded. The fact that this little jewel -hard as a diamond and just as priceless - is only the first release (on CD/vinyl) on Melt-banana's own label is the most exciting thing about this release! It would be far, far better that you go hungry for a week, or pay your bills late, or sell some plasma than you live another day without 'Charlie' in your life!"
"Charlie" truly qualifies as new music.

"It's amazing that the same instrumentation (guitar, bass, drums, vocals) that makes much popular music created the sounds on this album. Every member of Melt-Banana plays with personal style and incredible energy. Buy the album, see them live if you can, and tell everyone about them. If you are in a band that tries to push the limits, "Charlie" will teach you humility."
A substantial improvement.

"Melt-Banana's first album was great. I won't deny that. But with "Charlie," the band has evolved int a whole new entity. All the speed, noise, and funk remains intact, and the band gains a sense of continuity between songs. Setting this disc on shuffle is not the way to go, as the tracks blend so well into each other. Highlights include "Spathic!!" and "Area 877 (Phoenix mix)." A great album, for all who enjoy the band."
Either you'll hate it, or love it.

"A lot of people say this is all noise and nothing else. Well it is very loud and does have some very noise parts to it, but that doesn't make it noisy. Everything that can be heard is noisy to some extent. This album is incredible. It is sparatic and full of high energy. It's probably most accessible to fans of Mr. Bungle, The Locust and Fantomas. But people who like that music probably already know about Melt Banana. It can be hard to listen to if you're just getting into the group and trying them out, but it is worth the time in the end. All the music on here is so well executed and displayed, it's ashame that some people don't have the patience to actually try to like something they aren't use too."

"I first saw them opening for Mr. Bungle in '95, and I was pretty much blasted into the back row. These guys can really shake a club up. It's no wonder they're the most popular of the new wave of Japanese avant-punk bands right now. Extremely hyper, noisy, but generally tight. The best part of this band, IMO, is not the kinetic sounds they produce, but the insanely poetic lyrics. Sure, you can't understand them most of the time, but try reading them on the CD jacket. Kind of Beat, kind of surreal, ultimately charming. Impressive, passionate band, and I bet they only get better."
