Time for Organ-izing

"I found Mel Rhyne's 1960 session "Organ-izing" in a cut-out bin, and I'm sure glad I picked it up! For those of you who don't know this organist, he was best known for his contributions to several Wes Montgomery sessions, especially "Boss Guitar." The frontline of Blue Mitchell and Johnny Griffin are terrific as expected, and the rhythm trio of Gene Harris, Andy Simpkins (2/3s of The Three Sounds) and "Tootie" Heath are solid as well. The sextet format makes for some very refreshing listening -- certainly not your average organ jazz."
