Synopsis

This recording is a delightful concert of rarely heard songs, performed by intelligent and very musical singers--with the added benefit of perfectly matched voices in the duets. Although Mendelssohn the songwriter is vastly overshadowed by his deservedly esteemed contemporaries Schubert and Schumann, his more than 100 songs and duets deserve far more attention, if only for their pleasing singability and masterful integration of piano and vocal line. The disc's cover doesn't mention that two of the 28 selections are by Felix's extraordinarily talented sister, Fanny, whose songs (featured more extensively on several other recordings) are worthy of inclusion in the standard German song repertoire. Baritone Nathan Berg shows himself to be a formidable lieder singer, his voice capable of an impressive range of color, seamless register changes, and finely graded dynamics. Sophie Daneman's light, lyrical soprano works perfectly for these congenial melodies and in the context of the songs' generally lighthearted mood. --David Vernier

(5 out of 5 stars)

"Mendelssohn's genius for balancing good taste with sophistication shines forth in this collection of his songs and duets, along with two by his sister Fanny, sung by Daneman and Berg. It is music that is self-assured in its craftsmanship while remaining superbly refined and pleasure listening. Mendelssohn writes his songs with extraordinary economy of means--not a note is out of place nor is there any hint of affectation. Although the writing lacks the storminess and darkness that pervades the lieder of Schumann and other contemporaries, Mendelssohn more than compensates for this lack of stormy Romanticism by infusing his songs with genuine joy and happiness, breaking them out of the realm of mere drawing room amusements. The accompaniment is sensitive and responsive to the superb singers, who have a real feel for the music with their crystal clear baritone and soprano voices."
