Adequate symphonies, magical overtures

"I have waited many years for EMI to reissue Inbal's recordings of Mendelssohn overtures, which I used to own on LP. The performances are absolutely magical! The conductor brings out all the contrasts in mood, tempo, dynamics and emotion without ever belaboring them or dominating the music. It breathes and lives under his masterful and charming guidance. The sound quality is superb as well!

It is too bad the same cannot be said for Muti's merely competent performances of the Symphonies. A young Muti trying to prove himself, not really at the service of the composer. Compare with Peter Maag and the LSO performing Symphony #3 and the Hebdrides Overture, stunning sound and performances."
