Synopsis
Amazon.com Despite the budget-bin marketing of 1996--there are no photos or illustrations on the package--it includes nine new Haggard compositions and contributions from such admirers as Dwight Yoakam, Buck Owens, Iris DeMent, Johnny Paycheck, and John Anderson. 1996 may not match Haggard's great late-'60s work, but it's better than 95 percent of the country releases of the '90s. When two Haggard tribute albums appeared in 1994, the subject himself was most impressed by DeMent's version of "Big City." Haggard not only hired her as an opening act, but recorded her brilliant song about her father's death, "No Time to Cry," for 1996. Also impressive are the graceful, swinging, blue-collar laments "Truck Driver's Blues" and "Too Many Highways." --Geoffrey Himes Similar CDs

CD ReviewsStill going strong! annamae45@hotmail.com | Boston, Massachusetts | 05/17/1998 (5 out of 5 stars) "What a beautiful album Haggard has produced to follow up his many, many other soulful tributes to a life well lived. Merle Haggard mixes true honky-tonk ("Beer Can Hill", where he is joined by classic Buck Owens) with a sound rather like The Band (a truly memorable ballad called "No Time to Cry") and traditional Merle humor in "Untanglin' my Mind". Haggard puts those pure and hearty vocal chords forward, proving that he still has what it takes to be one of country music's greatest and longest enduring stars." He hasn't lost much Michael Carley | San Joaquin Valley, CA | 11/30/1999 (5 out of 5 stars) "Some say that Hag's songwriting skills have diminished. If that's true, you can't tell from this CD. His most recent collection of new music is also one of his best, from the raucus 'Sin City Blues' (reminiscent of his best raunchy honky tonkers like 'Living With The Shades Pulled Down') to the haunting 'Kids Get Lonesome Too'. In the last track, Merle displays his love for the natural world, in a way that only he can. Country radio should be ashamed of itself for not playing this." He Still has it! C. Fischer | Bloomington, IN United States | 12/22/2008 (5 out of 5 stars) "The voice is craggier and the tunes are just as good or better than many of his earlier classics...essential for Hag fans! In addition, his band keeps getting tighter and is a great joy to listen to."
