CD ReviewsThe one that should not have been... Jeff Kingman | Wisconsin | 08/14/2010 (1 out of 5 stars) "Lets start this off right, I love Metallica. They have been one of my favorite bands since I was 8 and will always be one of my favorites but this album is not the Metallica I grew up listening to. First off, it's not even Metallica playing, sure it's James, Lars, and Kirk but this was after Jason left, and during a really bad time for the band that almost split them up, so during production Bob Rock filled in and played bass the entire time this was being recorded...wait, Bob Rock...the producer? Yep. Even though Rob is in the album photos and on the list as a band member he wasn't brought in until this album was completed (or near completion) so the only time he played these songs was live. And my biggest problem with the overall sound of Bobs playing is that it sounds too much like Korn (not that it's bad, just let Korn play bass like that) and Bob, stick to producing. Secondly, what the hell was Lars thinking when he decided to go with a different style of drumming on St. Anger? It sounds like garbage (garbage cans as a matter of fact) and isn't what I'd expect from such a talented musician. And Kirk, where are your guitar solos? This album sucks. The only song that I somewhat enjoy is 'Some Kind of Monster' I understand that at the time the band was going through alot of crap but honestly, that wasn't really the best time to produce an album, especially since they didn't have a permanent replacement for Jason at the time, they should have just taken a hiatus, gotten their stuff together and then maybe 2005 would have been the release of Death Magnetic instead of 2008. Speaking of Death Magnetic, I was glad that the old Metallica was back on that album. Skip St. Anger, I wish I hadn't spent money on it, like I said, this is the one that should not have been." What a disaster! Riaan | South Africa | 08/19/2010 (1 out of 5 stars) "Definitely an album Metallica would like to forget. The drums sounds like someone is slapping a biscuit tin and the singing is just terrible. The songs are rubbish - I got the album for free and didn't even give it away - it went straight into the bin. Garbage." At least it's metal... R. ll | Buffalo,NY,USA | 08/19/2010 (2 out of 5 stars) "which is more than you could say for load(of crap)and re-load..james hetfield was going through a very hard time in his life, trying to kick a decades-long bout of alcoholism ,and suffering a nearly year-long nervous breakdown .as a result, his priority(understandably!!) was hardly making music and, boy, does it show... this album suuuccckkksss!! but, like i said, better than load and re-load..how sad is that?
