CD Reviews

Brilliant and truly different

"I know MEW since I am Danish, and wanted to do somebody a favor by recommending this album. Mew has quite a unique sound, as the reviewer above also finds. It is really hard to describe, which is only to say that you are in for a special treat. It is indie rock of some sort, but yes, very playful, imaginative, cinematic. By the way, MEW have been around for ages, and this album consists of about 6 reproductions of earlier works and the rest are new, which means that it is great quality. All songs are brilliant. I also recommend Kashmir from Denmark, almost equally great, and these two bands are just about what Denmark has to offer on the music scene, and its not bad, at all"
The "Cinema Paradiso" of music !

"Originally from Denmark but now based themselves in London, MEW has definitely got my vote for the most artistic album of 2003. It's hard to generally define what genre they fall into. It's even harder to pick on another group/band that sounds like MEW. I guess it'd be a justice to describe as a mix of PLACEBO, ROYKSOPP, and RADIOHEAD. By ingeniously blending the alternative, cinematic, orchestra, and electronic sounds, nothing describes them best other than what I called `The Cinema Paradiso of music.' Listening to "Frengers", you'll be taken on a timeless journey into layered of eclectic soundscapes. Not only that, the album is also filled with poetic lyrics and top-notch vocals. Opening with a more aggressive track ("Am I Wry? No"), you'll immediately notice a distinguished vocal of Jonas Bjerre that reminds me of the vocalist of the 80's group called "The Outfield." There's this `cuteness' high pitched vocal that, in my opinion, sounds even better when he hits those high notes like in "Comforting Sounds", "She Came home For Christmas", "Eight Flew Over, One Was Destroyed" and "Symmetry." And let me just say that you should never worry about hitting the skip button because the tracks are keep getting better and better as it keeps on progressing. An epic "Comforting Sounds" which runs for 8:53 in it's original album version (not the edited version on radio/MTV) is surely gorgeous, but rest-assured that plenty of other beautiful tracks you get here. It's hard to pick favorite tracks on this album cause the whole tracks are great and each has it's unique quality to each own. But if I have to pick on my personal favorites, those are: "Symmetry", "She Came Home For Christmas", "Comforting Sounds", and "Am I Wry? No." This one has definitely become my new favorite group. The album is easily one of my Top 3 albums in 2003, possibly the best yet !"
Mew is awesome but where can i find them?

"well, this is a semi-review of mew, but rather, a qeustion for the previous 4 reviewers below, but before i start, i must say that mew has REALLY impressed me with their vocal/musical range, style & ability to convey feelings in poetry. it was a 'love @ first hear'. wonderful stuff!

now: first of all, i cannot find this particular jpn+dvd version ANYWHERE! i've special ordered it online for several months, and been looking all over san francisco bay area record stores (amoeba, rasputin's... etc) to no avail! where did you find ur copy? i have friends looking for it in japan/norway as well, but no luck, boohoo... perhaps u may be able to help me locate a copy? (not the regular version, that i can get easily online.)

then, this is THE question. from the amazon tracklisting i see that there're 23 tracks in the jpn+dvd verson. but at the editorial review it only mentions 2 extra tracks + 1 video clip for CS.

it confuses me... what exactly does this version have that the regular one (10 tracks) does't have? i want it i want it i want it. it's been a while since i fall in love with a band instantly. mew IS truly amazing...
