Are you kidding me? Really?!? (warning, spoilers here)

"Giacchino and his producer seriously need to have their butts kicked from here to Vulcan! Star Trek was hands-down one of the best (if not the best) films of 2009. Like with any excellent film, one of the things that made it so remarkable was a brilliant score. But, as with Giacchino's soundtracks for Lost and Up!(a series and film I'm a major fan of) the stand out tracks that give the scenes that exciting goose-bump-inducing resonance ARE ABSENT FROM THE SOUNDTRACK! Where's the Trek score to Kirk and Sulu's fight on the Nero's drill? How about the cue from Pike leaving his crew behind with their instructions? Two of the more significant, memorable moments, and a lot of others, that I was very much looking forward to, not present? To quote Bones, "Good God, man!" This album is more like a collection of bonus tracks. The work on it is well done, but if you've seen the film, this is a tremendous let-down and not worth it in my opinion. Talent-wise, I rank Giacchino up there with the best of the best, including Williams, Zimmer and Goldsmith, but purchasing his work without previewing beforehand is...well...illogical."

Should be Oscar Winning!

"Well, the Oscars are over and the soundtrack from the latest incarnation of the Star Trek franchise can only be called 'Academy Award nominated' instead of winning. But regardless, that doesn't detract from the deep brass and haunting strings that complete Michael Giacchino's rendition of the science fiction epic.



When I first watched the movie, it was the beautiful yet sad theme that now seems to represent the U.S.S. Enterprise herself that set up the epic and tragic end of the U.S.S. Kelvin. Its simple melodic highs and lows represents past ages of sailing, even though ships fly in space rather than oceans in the film. The second track softens and breathes of life and new experiences... while the brass literally screams 'Boldly Go' in the arias that pass.



It may only be Academy Award nominated, but don't forget that Michael Giacchino also won Best Original Score for Up. Maybe that's why - because they could only enter one nomination. Regardless, this is a great soundtrack to listen to while reading a thrilling novel or while shoveling snow - you know it has to be done but it doesn't have to be a chore.
