I loved Michael Gordon's Van Gogh! Musically, the rhythms are strong and compelling, and the variety of instrumental textures is appealing. The texts (letters to his brother Theo) are very moving, particularly in the section called The Hague 2. As with most classical vocal music,it's not always easy to understand the words, so take time to sit down and follow the text in the booklet while you are listening. This is the most exciting new work I've heard in a long time." |
