Michael O'Neill is a Vancouver-based composer, performer, and leader of the new music bagpipe ensemble Mearningstone. Ontophony features four quite different original compositions for bagpipes alone or bagpipes with taiko drums and other acoustic percussion, performed by Mearingstone with Vancouver taiko trio Uzume Taiko and guests. The music combines the piping tradition with new music influences such as minimalism; non-traditional techniques such as hocketing, polyphony, and extended scales; and world music colors and rhythms. The result is an intense and completely novel musical experience.
