CD ReviewsA date to remember Cedric Westphal | san francisco, ca | 09/18/2004 (5 out of 5 stars) "Michel Petrucciani's date with time is an amazing recording of the pianist, by himself. I also own his 'solo live' album, and his 'duke ellington' tribute, and can't pick which one I like better.
I have had the chance/the pleasure/the honor to see Michel live (I actually had the sadness to also see him passed away: his tomb is next to Chopin's in Paris Pere Lachaise cemetary) Back to the 'date with time': it is a mix of originals and standards. 'round midnight opens in a very bright way, instead of the usual noir atmosphere. 'Mike Pee' could only have been named this way by a French guy. He manages to mesh Weil's "speak low" into his solo. All songs are explored thoroughly, with long solos that have a Keith Jarrett tinge to them. Michel Petrucciani later disowned this recording, saying he was drunk while recording it, and that he would like to re-record it. I do like it as it is." |
