Synopsis
Amazon.comAs he did with Spinal Tap, Christopher Guest has the uncanny ability to perfectly mock and pay tribute to a music sub-culture. This time around, he spoofs the folk revival scene of the 1960s that spawned the Kingston Trio, Limeliters, and Peter, Paul & Mary with a movie about the reunion concert of fictitious groups Mitch & Mickey, the Folksmen, and the New Main Street Singers. Mitch & Mickey's romance-themed duets sound more earnest than campy, though it's hard not to laugh at the autoharp solo on "A Kiss at the End of the Rainbow." The real highlights belong to tracks by the hilarious Folksmen, whose repertoire somehow included a goofy song about the Spanish Civil War ("Skeletons of Quinto"), a harmonizing take on the Stones' "Start Me Up," and a tune seemingly about a train wreck in a coal mine ("Blood on the Coal"). Simply hilarious. --Jason Verlinde

Rita B. from SEATTLE, WA Reviewed on 9/5/2009... 2 huge thumbs up for this gem. The soundtrack is as good or even better than the film itself- full of folksy songs so dead-on perfect in their execution that only some of the lyrics give them away as expert parodies.
Gayle V. from CLARKSVILLE, TN Reviewed on 6/4/2007... The movie is a really funny mockumentary, but some of the music is great! I really like the folksmen and Mitch & Mickey's songs. If you like folk music, you'll like it.

Great C. Weidmann | Pleasant Grove, UT | 05/17/2010 (4 out of 5 stars) "I probably wouldn't have enjoyed this as much if I hadn't already seen and greatly enjoyed the movie--the context just makes the music that much more enjoyable. This is such a talented ensemble! But I do wish the soundtrack included the "Sure Flow" jingle."
