(5 out of 5 stars)

"1958 MILES is a Japanese album which gathers together Miles Davis' four non-LP studio recordings from that watershed year ("On Green Dolphin Street," "Fran Dance," "Stella by Starlight" and the phenomenal "Love for Sale"), tosses in a particularly progressive 1955 track by the trumpeter's original quintet ("Little Melonae") and as a result earns a place right alongside MILESTONES and KIND OF BLUE for the superb quality of its music. Fabulous performances from both the quintet and the complete BLUE band make this an absolutely essential part of any Miles collection - or, for that matter, any jazz collection, period. Unavailable in the US for many years, these tracks are all now included in the MILES DAVIS AND JOHN COLTRANE boxed set; but for those who already own the bulk of that collection and are thus unwilling to make so large a purchase for a mere handful of gems, this disc still serves as a fine and economical alternative."
Lyrical and advanced

"This beautiful collection gives ample insight into the lyrical flourish of Miles Davis, Bill Evans, John Coltrane, Cannonball Adderley and the rest of the crew (on "Green Dolphin Street" and, particularly, on Porter's "Love for sale"), but "Little Melonae" (actually - Thelonious Monk's "Straight no Chaser" on my edition of the cd) gives quite a heated and somewhat advanced performance by Miles, Coltrane, Red Garland on piano (instead of Bill Evans), Paul Chambers and Jimmy Cobb on drums (instead of Philly Joe Jones).

Now if you're a completist and can't get hold of this album, I can recommend a way: buy Original Album Classics and you'll get to extra tracks on this album - "My Funny Valentine" and "Oleo"..."
