"This album is one that will grow on the listener. At first, the dense music will not appeal to some, but the more one listens to it, the better it sounds. He Loved Him Madly, Rated-X, and Mtume are all tracks that would individually make the album worth buying."

Miles' most bewitching album, like that of Voodoun

"Eventhough a lot of critics and music lovers do not concider this one of Miles' best albums, we all must admit it's influence upon the art of the groove and maintaing a picturesque view of music's landscape. For example, the tune Rated X is one that I view as the father of Modern Jungle and drum and bass music. I also personally feel that this tune, to me, is the tightest groove I've ever heard. Another point of reference would be the track entitled Cylipso Frelimo. If you listen to this very closely you will recognize the groove as that of the underworld of the Super Mario Brothers video game. In all the album is a must for musicians and I definately think it is worth a listen. Enjoy."

"The Great Lost Miles Davis Album! Now available as part of Columbia's impressive re-issue project. This CD was originally released as a "double-album" featuring then-recently-recorded music and tracks that had not quite made the cut for previous releases (these are not below-par "out-takes" - tracks like "Honky Tonk" featuring Keith Jarrett & John McLaughlin, and "Rated X" by the 'On The Corner' ensemble, are first-rate. If you truly enjoy 70s-era Miles, you cannot pass this one by. (And Play It Loud!)"
