CD Reviews

Astonishing and wonderful

"Not enough North Americans know about this album. Range, variety, beauty, power, amazing singing and songwriting--this set has it all. It's ambitious as hell, and the creativity bursts from the ... I was going to say grooves, but that would date me, so I'll say "pits" instead. Think of the Beatles' white album and you're in the ballpark. I'm not kidding. Of course, it doesn't sound anything like the Fab Four, but the ambition and accomplishment are similar. If anything, I prefer Clube da Esquina 2 to any Beatles album I know of (yes, including Sgt. Pepper). This would be one of my desert island discs. A masterpiece. Strong words, yes, but that's how I feel. One disclaimer: like all opinions of music, this is about taste, not fact. You may or may not like this record. But if you're one of the ones who like it, it will become a treasured discovery that you'll listen to repeatedly."
Confident and Self Assured

"Clube Da Esquina 2 is the final entry from Milton's peak years. It is a portrait of an artist that has realized his potential and now enjoys the view from the great height he has achieved. It isn't quite as adventurous as much of his earlier peak period albums, like the first Clube Da Esquina, his masterpiece...or Geraes, instead it's the work of a man with nothing left to prove, a confident and self assured addition to the Milton Nascimento legacy. A very worthy purchase."
