CD Reviews

Brilliant
Paul Robertson | Saint Paul, MN USA | 06/09/2004
(5 out of 5 stars)

"I never knew Hugo Largo but I heard "Thrilled to Be Here" one morning on NPR (Morning Becomes Eclectic) and I literally pulled over to the side of the road to write down the artist. Mimi who? I searched forever and I'm glad I didn't give up. This is a fascinating, tough-then-tender, hard-then-soft, often thrilling, often utterly haunting record. It's been in my top 5 favorites for the past three or four years now. Get it. Definitely."
Mysterious and cold
J. Holmes | yokohama, japan | 01/14/2006
(4 out of 5 stars)

"a very creative and mysterious album. lots of weird melodies and cold atmosphere...electronics and acoustics meet and meld in these compositions to startling effect. Mimi's vocals are superb and her songwriting approach is unique and intelligent. i would recommended Soak for fans of Bjork or Portishead. i love the cover art, with the translucent jellyfish and strange undersea life forms, it's a good representation of the music contained within."
Art Rock Lives!

"King Crimson meets Kate Bush? No, I wouldn't narrow it down like that. Soak is unclassifiably original and not the least derivative or cliche. This poetry is intense, intelligent and so female. You can understand every word. How 'bout that? I've loved Mimi's singing all the way since Hugo Largo. She is an incredibly brave and smart singer. I love her theatricality and coolness, her control and how she pushes her limits. Can I cover Fire and Roses? That song got me through a very hard time, allowing me to scream and cry along with her in the car, shaking my head knowingly about it all. This is grown-up music about being present in the moment of confronting truths, about memory, about love, about self. The music is unusual. Electronic but not about beats or collage for collage's sake. It is beautiful, rhythmically angular and harmonically challenging, like everything she and Hahn Rowe have done. Some songs rock, others trance out. It's all good."
