CD Reviews

ABSOLUTELY THE BEST
03/07/2000
(5 out of 5 stars)

"This compilation contains 34 great songs released between 1970-1997, including two romantic duets, Amore and Question of feeling, written by the composer of Notre-Dame de Paris, Richard Cocciante, and two famous tunes, It's a Lonely Town and Never, Never, Never(I hate you then I love you) in its Italian versions. Mina has released numerous best albums in the past but this one is the REAL Best Album because it contains one or two best songs from every single album and 6 great songs never appeared on any album. A MUST!"
A great pop singer

"Mina is an enduring Italian pop diva. This cd was purchased before a trip to Italy. At first, the production was an obstacle to enjoying this, especially for the songs from the 70s. Mina doesn't always seem to have access to the latest and best in recording equipment, the slickest producers, or the best musicians. The songs are clearly oriented to grab as much radio play as possible (it is a "greatest hits" collection after all), and some of the tunes are repetitive. Finally, my Italian isn't very good, and the cd doesn't have an English lyrics insert, so I'm in the dark much of the time about what she's singing about. However, once I got past the production and surface kitsch, I heard a woman would can really belt out a tune. She's so good that she lifts my spirits with her operatic style even when I have no idea what's she's singing. I can see why she's had such a long career. She puts most of the US pop divas to shame. I'd much prefer to listen to Mina sing in Italian than Madonna or Mariah sing in English. A worthwhile purchase."
