CD Reviews

More catchy XTC-inspired pop
Pop Kulcher | San Carlos, CA USA | 02/09/2002
(4 out of 5 stars)

"One of the lesser-known acts in the Elephant 6 neo-pop stable, the Minders are America's answer to XTC, edgy pop that rests squarely in Lennon-McCartney land but with an occasional tendency to annoy. Fortunately, the latter tendency is largely absent on this album, their most consistent -- and most fully produced -- to date. Not every song bears repeating (particularly the more downbeat tracks later on the disc), but it offers a handful of hooks that will stick in your brain for weeks. The title track and the similar-sounding "Give Me Strength" will make any XTC fan cry ..."Hand on Heart" is a rollicking romp, and if "Right as Rain" isn't the catchiest song of the year, it's at least in the running."
Golden street is golden
P. Schumacher | atlanta, GA United States | 04/03/2001
(5 out of 5 stars)

"This is as good as or better than all previous Minders records. In addition to the very lovely, always catchy trademark Minders sound, there are two new kinds of song--Light and A New Kind of Way. The Minders take their Neo-Psychedelic sound to the next logical step: backward tape-loops, long LONG instrumental breaks, dissonant sounds. These are a very nice complement to the rest of the album--they leaven the sugary up-tempo tunes with a dose of strangeness. Also there is the woman brushing her teeth, and a piano instrumental that would fit on a classical LP. Catchy, deep, and strange. A must for fans."
Minders 'golden street'
P. Schumacher | 05/18/2001
(5 out of 5 stars)

"4 1/2 stars... this album is a lot better than i expected it to be. i bought the minders first album 'hooray for tuesday' a while back, and while i thought it was a worthwhile pop album, it doesn't even come close to matching the intelligence and intensity displayed on 'golden street'. i've listened to this album everyday since i bought it (something that hardly happens these days) and it doesn't surprise me that a lot of people who fell in love with the earlier minders albums would downplay how great 'golden street' is. more than likely they were looking for something that they can bob their "collective" heads to and chew bubble gum while speaking in indie lingo with elitist "friends". there is more to the minders than that, 'golden street' is located in a complicated labyrinth of a strange city and whether you see the buildings and their inhabitants or a dot on a map is really dependant upon what you (the traveller) brings on this fantastic voyage."
