By now, folks buying Mindy McCready albums know what they're getting into. If McCready's far from a devastating singer, she's also far from incompetent, and when she has solid material like Matraca Berg's "All I Want Is Ev... more »erything," this album's most traditional-country-flavored track, or the road song "Tumble and Roll," she's capable of enough emotional vigor to pull them off. Unfortunately, her third record lacks much in the way of memorable songs, and whereas her previous two outings hinted at a feminist edge, the 23-year-old McCready now strikes a conventional desperate-for-love vulnerability and often a pouting vocal style. Invariably, the weaker the tune, the more she resorts to cloying whispers and chirps. If I'm Not So Tough has any highlights, they're to be found in Glen Duncan and Larry Franklin's soulful fiddle breaks and Paul Franklin's tasty pedal steel, which, to McCready's credit, are given plenty of room to roam. --Roy Kasten« less

Usually Mindy's songs are very emotional and touching, but this album falls flat.
CD Reviews
Best CD of 1999

"Mindy McCready never ceases to amaze me. She hand-picked the songs for this album and did an altogether stellar job. The best song on the album is "Take Me Apart," a sassy number. She has touching ballads, such as "Hold Me" and "Dream On," as well as a poppy, "Over and Over," which would have been a huge hit if it had been released to radio. "I'm Not So Tough," "Thunder and Roses," and "Lucky Me" are also among the smart, heart-felt songs that make this album a total success."
Great Album by Mindy McCready

"I have all of Mindy McCready's albums, but I must say that "I'm Not So Tough" is the best one of the three! The songs are awesome and her voice is so beautiful. I especially like the catchy tune "All I Want Is Everything." The only reason I didn't give this album five stars was the fact that a lot of the songs have the same tune and sort of resemble each other. However, overall it is a wonderful, solid album. I would definitely recommend buying it, especially if you own her two previous albums."
She's back

"I've always loved Mindy, but even I can say that her second CD was lacking.....however, her third one shows that she is on her way again. Though it may not have the awesome lyrics of her first CD, it has tons of emotion. Mindy's voice has diffinently matured. This CD shows her many talents.....almost like a different voice with each song. Songs such as "Thunder and Roses", "Over and Over" and "I'm Not So Tough" will keep the record in your CD player. For any Mindy fan, this CD will remind you of why you feel in love with her the first time."
The worst album this year

"I liked Mindy's work since the beginning with "Ten Thousand Angels" You would expect an artist to get better with each new album. This is not the case with Mindy McCready. I have tried listening to CD over and over and can not get into it. I don't understand how she pick such awful songs. Her voice is gorgeous and should be used on better songs."
