CD Reviews

"Minus" everything you liked about the original album
Sean M. Chandler | Kentucky, USA | 03/05/2007
(2 out of 5 stars)

"The album "Menos el Oso" was a beautiful, mellow work of art for Minus the Bear. The lyrics, musicianship...everything about it far surpassed my expectations, and naturally I didn't build up an album of "remixes" too much because there was simply no way such a disc could surpass the original. In the vein of "Re-animation" by Linkin Park (bad example, I know, but work with me, here), though, I at least expected this album to be fun, or at least engaging, but no, this album is all over the place. I think your average scenester-fan-myspacer could have come up with better renditions of these songs. Some of the tracks "bear" absolutely no resemblance to the originals at all and are basically just four-minutes of random sounds and noise that only occasionally seem to match some sort of beat. It's terrible. Only the "Pachuca Sunrise" remix and possibly the "Hooray" remix are worth listening to more than once, although the latter has virtually no coherent resemblance to the original (but it still sounds kind of cool). Overall, 2 stars is generous, but I'm so in love with the original disc that I was in a pretty giving mood. Don't buy this album. Buy "Menos el Oso" and "Highly Refined Pirates" and go see them live."
High highs and REALLY low lows

"It goes w/o saying that this shouldn't be your first MTB album. Menos is the masterpiece. At the same time, you have to understand this album for what it is. it is a remix album. So you can't expect it to be the new MTB release. With all that being said, this is a meh pick up. The remixes where they actually use the words from the original songs and resemble the originals (isn't that by definition what a remix is???) are great. 1,2, and 8 are amazing. Then you have the rest. I have no idea what some of these DJs were thinking. Some didn't use any of the words from the originals and their remixes dont even remotely resemble the originals. the middle of the disk (tracks 3-6) is complete garbage. if i wanted to hear some stupid DJ "spin" his own stuff then I would have bought their crappy cd. The Pig War is probably my favorite MTB song but the remix doesn't have any words to it. I was really disappointed. I would recommend buying tracks 1,2, and 8 off Itunes. I would have been much happier paying 3 bucks instead of 14 for this CD."
Fun, fun in the sun.

"The other reviewer has a stick up the persons behind.. 2 stars? This album is so awesome in its own right. Sure, lots of the songs barely resemble the original but still, ITS A REMIX ALBUM.... DURRR... I recommend this album because the songs are so all over-the-place and in a good way.
