"With the new Andrew Lloyd Weber Phantom movie in theatres, I hope more people can start paying attention to this hidden little gem of a soundtrack.
When I watched the movie on TV a long, long time ago, the thing that stuck in my mind the most was the music. Imagine my surprise when I stumbled across this CD by accident while cruising Amazon.com.
The main theme, played in Don Juan Triumphant, Graveyard Violin, and the Finale, is one of the most darkly beautiful themes I've heard. Graveyard Vioin is simply amazing, escalating from a wonderfully played solo violin into the theme being played by the entire orchestra. Other highlights of this album include the songs sung by wonderful vocalist, Nancy Fontana: The Jewel Song and Don Juan Triumphant.
Don't get turned off by the fact that this soundtrack is to a 15 year old slasher movie starring a very Freddy Kreuger-like Robert Englund. No cheesy sound effects here: Misha Segal's full orchestral music is top-notch, multitextured and haunting, which lends a dark and lush gravity to the movie. And it holds its ground strongly as a stand-alone soundtrack, which is probably why this is still available in stores.
Compared to the Andrew Lloyd Weber musical, I feel that this soundtrack is much, much darker and bleaker. To me, this captures more of the feeling of the novel."
Forceful "Phantom" Surpasses Expectations

"Unlike most typical soundtracks to horror movies this recording is filled with both spine-tingling refrains and beautiful melodies. Misha Segal conducts a fine orchestra; the orchestrations are robust, and Nancy Fontana is a wonderful soprano. She gives the finest performance of "The Jewel Song" I have heard!"
The Phantom of the Opera 1989 Motion Picture Soundtrack

"After seeing the major motion picture of the 1989 version of Phantom of the Opera with Robert Englund, I was a little disapointed with the film itself because it really didn't follow the past versions or the novel as well. But I was very impressed with the music. I then tracked down the soundtrack for the motion picture. Misha Segal did a very good job for creating the score. Harriet Schock does well on the vocals for "Don Juan Triumphant" and the soundtrack was more malevolent and holds up very well on CD. Though I was disaponited that it didn't have the score for one scene in the film where the opera critic is killed. That is one of my favorite music scenes in the film and was hoping it would be on the soundtrack, but it wasn't, oh well, I enjoyed it anyway and Misha Segal is one of my favorite film composers."
Wonderful classical music from a little known movie

"When "The Phantom of the Opera" was released in 1989, starring Robert Englund, I enjoyed several things about it, especially one of its key points, the wonderful soundtract. This CD is a great find. Composed and written by an unknown by Misha Segal, this music captures the spirit of the movie. Suspense, pity, and wonder are just some of the emotions that you feel in this treat for the ears. Most recommended: "Graveyard Violin," where the film's theme is played beautifully and with great emotion. Don't miss this CD!"
Pretty Good But Not the Best

"Not a bad choice. Thought all of the music is creepy sounding it's pretty good. The "Don Juan Triumphant" played on the violin is absoutely beautiful and "The Jewel Song" taken from the opera "Faust" is sung quite well. There were other songs that I din't really care for but all-in-all I think it's worth the money it costs."
