Serge Koussevitsky's live Missa is a mixed bag. The sound, even by 1938 standards, is drab and airless, while the choral and solo singing rarely rises above adequate. What's more, the conductor's dragging, shapeless conceptions of the Gloria and Credo lack the white heat and crackling tension that characterizes Toscanini's oft-pirated 1940 NBC broadcast. Yet there are beautiful moments too: Richard Burgin's touching violin solo in the Sanctus, and the hushed, sustained Agnus Dei. As for the coupling, Koussevitsky 's anachronistic tempo fluctuations in Eroica come off with more conviction and orchestral refinement in this 1945 BSO remake than his earlier London Symphony version. --Dan Davis
