Childhood Memories Came FLOODING Back!!
William K. Knotts | Parkersburg, WV United States | 11/04/2007
(4 out of 5 stars)

"If you had any of the Christmas Little Golden Records when you were a child in the 50s and 60s, these are the songs from those cute little yellow records!! Granted, they sound like they're performed by the folks who sang the songs in the "follow the bouncing ball" cartoons of the 30s and 40s, but what memories they brought back to a 50 year old man who had these recordings as a child 40+ years ago!! I was looking for one particular song, "Christmas is Coming," and that's what brought me to this product. As soon as I heard the inro music, I KNEW I'd struck GOLD! One of the selections is incomplete, however; the narrative of "The Night Before Christmas" ends after the first part of the story. On the original record, the first part was on side one and the remainder was on side two. Apparently, whoever compiled this collection neglected to add the side two conclusion. And perhaps one of the funniest selections is the somewhat awful rendition of "White Christmas." There is a distinctive female voice that seems a bit off-key and wants to out-sing everyone else, with horrendous results!

All in all, I'd say that this collection is definitely for those of us who had those great Little Golden Record "babysitters." I remember sitting in the room off of our kitchen (my mom called it the dinette) and playing these records over and over again on our small, brown portable phonograph for hours. If you're looking for a collection of finely tuned Christmas music, this is really not for you. But if you want to bring out the kid in you, BUY THIS MARVELOUSLY NOSTALGIC CD!! MERRY CHRISTMAS AND HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!"
