CD Reviews

Beautiful record
Mag Eduard Linshalm | Vienna, Austria | 11/05/2006
(4 out of 5 stars)

"This is great movie jazz of the late nineteen-fifties, in a row with the MJQ's own "Odds Against Tomorrow", Miles Davis' "Ascenseur pour l'échafaud", the Jazz Messengers' "Des femmes disparaissent", and Duke Ellington's "Anatomy of a Murder". Excellent, if a bit top-heavy, sound. True jazz lovers may want a little more improvisation here and there, but should respect John Lewis' great score, which is done with great purpose and dexterity."
The usual Modern Jazz Quartet - Wonderful
John T. O'Connor | Ohio | 06/26/2007
(5 out of 5 stars)

"The Modern Jazz Quartet was one of the finest musical organizations ever. John Lewis was a master composer and arranger and a very competent jazz pianist. Milt Jackson was for a long time THE vibes player in jazz. Percy Heath was rock solid and technically proficient as a bassist and Connie Kay was a very subtle yet driving drummer. Together, they were great. This CD is made up of compositions by John Lewis for an Italian movie. It's very Baroque sounding, but also very bluesy and swinging. If you like the MJQ, you will love this CD"
As Beautiful and Unique as Venice itself!

"Hauntingly beautiful, the kind of music that one must hear when they go to heaven. It is very soft and serene. This is a perfect album to play on a rainy, Sunday morning while you're reading the newspaper and enjoying a cup of coffee. I have not seen the film yet, but after listening to this incredible creation, I am very much interested if nothing else to hear how the musical score fits in the story. It's hard for me to imagine anyone not liking this. The whole album is great and my personal favorite is "Venice". Also, I really love the album cover as well.

A true sleeper! This is one placid recording..."
