"There is heavy metal and in Pittsburgh there is steel. The sound of pounding steel was maybe heard in childhood. This is recalled in "Big Bang" which is a song as fast as anything. This place is where the heavy rock music by Modey Lemon started in 1999. Phil Boyd and Paul Quattrone met in college but it seems like education didn't affect them. They seem like they just wanted to make a lot of noise that two guys could make. The Moog synthesizer is like a third member of the band. They sound somewhere between Led Zeppelin and Gang of Four. They seem a little different from the Detroit rock and roll purist. Sometimes their music goes off in sonic experiments. The song "Caligula" has the biggest rock sound I have heard in ages. Sometimes there's a familiar garage sound like those Swedish bands. Modey Lemon are a band with a sense of humor. Yes, speed and loudness and humor are still important. Very important."

It's not lo-fi, it's just straight forward CHAOS!

"This is a must-have CD. The Modey Lemon got me hooked with "You Bug Me", and perhaps the only reason I gave this 4 stars was because that track wasn't included here. The whole disc is just plain ol' heaps of ruckus and energy, something that is SEVERELY lacking in music of all genres! What these two guys do with some pots and pans, one throat, one guitar, and a moog mg-1 is not only disturbing but inspiring. Recommended tracks on this CD: Caligula, It's Hard, Coffin Talk, but the whole disc is great, really, and makes me proud to live in Pittsburgh."

Not the White Stripes

"Someone recommended Modey Lemon to me by saying "they're like the White Stripes--guitar and drums only." Well, yeah, but the comparison ends there. These guys play loud and furious all the way through--no introspective noodling here. Most importantly, they sound like they're really having fun--and so does the listener. I played the disc in my car, and once or twice I feared for the health of my speakers, but they managed to handle it. The sound is hard to describe--like all good sounds--sometimes it's a little Led-Zep-retro, sometimes grunge, sometimes punk, but it's always vital and energizing and often surprising; they must be one hell of a live act. The lyrics sometimes get a bit lost in the sheer volume of things, but what you can hear of them is often good, and sometimes wonderfully morbid, like the song about the emperor Caligula (and how many rock songs can you name that seem to be based on Suetonius?). Anyway, I regard this record as a real find, and recommend it highly. Play it loud!"
