"While performing a show on a stage less than 20' long in a record store in Boise, ID, Mon Frere won me over.
Instantly into track one[entitled Y.M.M.W.D.S.B.], you are taken in by a cuddly synth riff. But what does Y.M.M.W.D.S.B. mean? "You make me wanna destroy something beautiful"...taken straight from the song's chorus. Cuddly? I think not.
The rest of the album's tracks take you on a ride of powerchords, twinkling keyboard ditties, and drum crescendos. Each song is put together differently, yet carries the same idea of killer rock songs you can dance to. No track should be skipped, which is a lot to say. You can put this album on from beginning to end. And even after one time through, you will have the guitar riffs in your head.
But the fact that they are from Seattle should just give you a hint right there.
I would recommend this album for anybody who likes:
*Catchy [but not pop sounding] rock
*To dance!
*Chick bands that wail
*The Yeah Yeah Yeahs
*Bands with synth/keyboards
*Energetic, fun, music
*To show boys who's boss :)
Nouela Johnston proves that bands headed by females can wail just as much as an all male group. If not more. And in Nouela's case, I would definitely say MORE.
AND!!! They don't even have a bass player [Like another girl/2 guy band we know...YYY's]
Blood, Sweat & Swords is a fine debut album, and I look forward to seeing what Mon Frere has in store for us in the future."
