Claudio Monteverdi's melodramatic opera Il Ritorno di Ulisse in Patria (The Return of Ulysses) enjoyed its premiere performance in Venice in 1641: the work was extremely successful from the very beginning and was performed in Bologne by the same cast a short time later. However, Il Ritorno was not destined to enjoy the same degree of fame as other Monteverdi works. It was not until the 20th century that the music world started taking a renewed interest in this very spirited and original opera.
