CD Reviews

Compilation of Moodies Ballads
Lonnie E. Holder | Columbus, Indiana, United States | 03/04/2003
(5 out of 5 stars)

"On the down side, this CD IS another compilation, so we aren't seeing anything new from the Moodies, in spite of Justin stating in multiple places that the Moodies have been working on a new CD for more than a year, and planned to release it last fall. This CD is not the promised new CD.On the up side, this CD continues in the tradition of Elton John's "Love Songs" and Madonna's "Something to Remember" collections. Each are specialized collections of ballads. Similarly, The Moody Blues have had beautiful ballads over the years, and the majority of the best are collected on this CD.Admittedly, most of the songs are by Justin, but Ray Thomas' "For My Lady" and John Lodge's "Lean on Me" are representative of the others. Mike Pinder was best known for his new age flavored music, and gets no representation, and Graeme Edge's contributions were similarly overlooked. However, while Justin Hayward gets the majority of the credit here, it's because the love ballad was always Justin's forte.Long time Moodies fans will find little here to interest them. As noted above, this is a compilation. However, it is a focused compilation, and those of us that can't seem to get enough of the Moodies will likely buy this just to have a different combination of music. I just hope the new Moodies album arrives sooner rather than later. For those of you who love the softer side of the Moodies, this CD is perfect for you. For die hard Moodies fans, we have to take what we can get, though in this case it's not a strain to enjoy this CD. Let's hope this CD is the last of what seems like endless compilations from the Moodies."
Great Moody Blues "Love Songs!"
Kevin Martinell KevyGuy | Dunmore, PA USA | 02/25/2003
(5 out of 5 stars)

"It's great to find that The Moody Blues now have a CD filled with love songs, and this is a nice variety. I enjoy every one of these tracks, and I like the order in which they appear. The sound quality is excellent on the entire CD, including the newly mastered versions of songs like "Had to Fall in Love," "Want to Be With You," and "Love Don't Come Easy." The single version of "Nights in White Satin" (Also featured on "The Best of The Moody Blues") is featured here, and it is a great way to start off the CD. "Haunted," from The Moody Blues' most recent studio album, "Strange Times," is the perfect tune to close out the CD, as well. I am also happy that there are no edited-down versions of any of the songs on this compilation (Most notably on the "Voices in the Sky" and "The Singles" CD's), so we get the full length versions of the tracks. This is a nice CD to relax to, as well. I give it an "A+!" :)"
Odd Collection
Martin A Hogan | San Francisco, CA. (Hercules) | 01/24/2003
(4 out of 5 stars)

"The Moody Blues keep pumping out greatest hits collections, instead of new albums. This is one odd collection. There are three songs from the early 1970's (only one was a hit). Five are from the 1980's (two were hits) and eight are from the 1990's (none were significant hits). This is a fantastic group and it's unclear why this collection exists. However, if you want to hear the Moody Blues of the last ten years, this is it. Either that or buy "Keys To The Kingdon" and "Strange Times"."
