CD Reviews

Strange compilation

"Like the 'Stones, you could be forgiven for thinking Motorhead have more compilations/best of releases than regular album recordings. Most of them are thrown-together standard favorites along with some live cuts, and this one follows pretty much the same formula. Disc one contains the rarer material, shuffled in with some more common tracks you can find on many other Motorhead releases. Now the so-called experts will probably tell you that (song name) is readily available on some obscure printing from Holland or Japan or what have you, and any real Motorhead fan would already have it. Well, I've been a Motorhead fan for fifteen years or so, and I can honestly say I've never seen some of these songs before or since. Some sound like demos, and 'Treat Me Nice', in particular, sounds like a rough version of 'You Better Run' from their March or Die album. They're mixed pretty well for demos, so it's hard to tell. There are even a couple of instrumentals, which is rare for Motorhead, although I would have liked to hear Lemmy's lyrics for a song called 'Fun on the Farm'! Disc two is filled with pretty common early songs. It does have a different version of 'Ace of Spades' that almost has a different tune entirely. Interesting, that one. Makes you wonder if that was the first version of it, and if it would have become their signature tune if they had released it in this form. This collection is ultimately worth picking up. It won't make a Motorhead fan out of you, but if you are one already, there's bound to be something here you don't have. It's reasonably priced for a two-disc set, although I think they could have easily pared it down to one disc and just left the rarer songs."

"A really good budget-priced 2-CD, 36 track sort of fan favorite / best of collection, one might say. Some memorable 'deep album cuts' are here for your listening pleasure. Tunes like "Love Me like A Reptile", "The Hammer", the vintage "Keep Us On The Road", Lemmy's personal tribute to bikers everywhere "Iron Horse", a rare version of "Ace Of Spades", "Stone Deaf Forever", "City Kids" and many others. A definite should-have."
