CD Reviews

Not what I expected
Dr. W. Martin James | Arkadelphia, AR USA | 10/13/2004

"I love Mountain. Leslie West is one of the more underappreciated guitarists, However, "Eruption" is not very good. The sound quality is bad, and it seems to be a compilation of various live concerts not necessarily the two listed on the cd. At one point during "Dreams of Milk and Honey" West mentions that Felix Pappalardi is playing base. Impossible if the concert dates are correct. Leslie West never could sing, afterall, he was a guitar player, but on these 2 cds his voice is shot, not to mention the sound quality. I still love Mountain but this cd is for completists only."
Best played loud as hell outside near a roaring fire

"The cover art on this double live CD captures the intensity of these sessions, which were captured at different venues and in different decades. Original Mountaineers Leslie West on, of course, guitars and vocals, and Corky Laing, as ever, providing drums and vocals are solid throughout and flashy in spots. A pair of bass players, Mark Clarke on disc 1 and Ritchie Scarlet on disc 2 round out the trio. (It's hard not to miss Felix, though.)

The band makes hay with lots of extended romps through classic Mountain songs and a few newer numbers in the mix. Gone are the subtleties that infused the classic versions of tracks such as Theme for an Imaginary Western or Nantucket Sleighride (I always felt keyboardist Steve Knight's contributions to Mountain were overlooked anyway). Here you get bare-knuckled hard tack instead.

The music here captures the spirit of live rock--though there are plenty of lapses in the recording quality--and West, Laing, and friends on bass don't just rehash the old tunes. Still, this double CD is not what most folks will want to spend a couple of hours with in their listening rooms. It is best played loud as hell outside near a roaring fire on a cold night.

Leslie West is Back!

"A real treat for Mountain and Leslie West fans, just 1 song from the old days, Milk and Honey is not from listed dates, but a killer version none-the-less. Leslie West's guitar tricks are seldom heard on album, but they are here for the enjoyment of all. This album is a must have for Mountain and Leslie fans alike. Leslie sounds GREAT on vocals, and his signature tone can only be appreciated by the real fans. Leslie stands alone at the top of the GREAT GUITARiSTS OF ALL TIME. So make room Eric and Jimi, Leslie needs some ROOM!!! Turn it up LOUD!!"
