Not everybody loves this set as much as I do. It was taped, in mono, at two series of concerts; the sound is mostly pretty good though never excellent. There are occasional bloopers and moments where the pianist's control isn't perfect. And yet, I find old man Mieczyslaw Horszowski's Mozart a revelation. He generally plays Mozart as a bolder, more assertive composer than the way we usually hear him, and he makes his case with complete conviction. It's not just the tragic K. 310 that benefits from this approach; all of these sonatas are compelling to me in these performances, warts and all. --Leslie Gerber

Sublime Mozart!

"Ok...I'm usually a complainer about the way most folks play Mozart. I'm not complaining this time. This is wonderful music making by Horszowski at his prime - or darn near it. As Leslie Gerber notes, this isn't note perfect, but I'm absolutely awestruck at the beauty of the performances. Mozart becomes more colorful, more appealing under Horszowski's care. If I were leaving for that desert isle, I think this might be the Mozart set I'd take. It's not a big name label, probably only a few hundred people in the world will bother to pick it up - but they're the ones in the know. My only warning is that while the recording is generally good for its era, it isn't digital and not stereo. If you can handle that, get it!"
