""The playing time of more than 70 minutes reflects the fact that this is a completed version of the unfinished mass. Almost ten minutes are added on the `Credo,' with excerpts from no fewer than six other masses by Mozart, and another six minutes added by setting the `Agnus Dei' to the music of the `Kyrie,' as composers of the time often did. Orfeo has issued this live performance of 20 June 1956 at the Stephanskirche in Wuerzburg as a tribute to Eugen Jochum, who founded the orchestra after the war and guided it for its first twelve years. Jochum also conducted the music at Furtwaengler's funeral in Heidelberg.
"This concert was one of many given in celebration of the bicentenary of Mozart's birth. The original mono broadcast tape has yielded a clear transfer of a fine performance, not as lean as what we hear today but typical of Mozartian style at mid-century. There is just enough sound of choral feet shuffling to suggest the ambience without being distracting. Seefried and Borg are more than dependable here (both had sung for Jochum in the `Requiem' given in Vienna in January 1956 to launch the bicentenary, a performance preserved by Deutsche Grammophon/Archiv), and the other soloists are fine. This issue is a worthy testimonial to an important musician."
