Super Musicality
07/24/2000
(4 out of 5 stars)

"While this particular recording is not the best as far as crystal clear sound, it gets 5 stars for musicality. I have heard many other recordings of the Requiem that are "better quality" but they do not adequately capture the mood and feel of a death mass. I have found them to be too fast or jumpy. This conductor does an excellent job at conveying the feel of the Requiem. So, while sometimes the lack of clarity is annoying, I'll still choose to listen to this "cheap" recording of the Requiem over any other recording any day because I think it's how Mozart would have wanted it to sound!"
Maria Zadori is wonderful!

(5 out of 5 stars)

"This is mostly about one track on this CD, which has been featured in a number of collections: K339: Laudate Dominum, sung by Maria Zadori, with the Budapest Philharmonic.

I'm obviously not the only one who likes this performance, judging by the popularity of the track. Ms Zadori manages to make a beautiful, unaffected, sincere performance of limpid beauty, a contrast to the more operatic style favored by so many sopranos.

The rest of the CD is equally good. It is almost sinful to be able to get such a wonderful recording for such a great price! You don't need a $20 dollar recording to thoroughly enjoy this amazing work (The Requiem). This is an excellent starter CD for those just getting interested in Mozart's sacred music, or Mozart choral music in general. What is more, you may never need another recording of the requiem, or really find one you like more than this one. A thousand blessings on LaserLight for their superb low-priced CDs, that must certainly be given credit for making the classics available at a reasonable price.

Lest I be misunderstood, let me make myself perfectly clear: it is not only Ms Zadori who excels on this CD; it is uniformly excellent.
