"Peter Maag - although not very well known - may well be the finest Mozart conductor living today. His performances of the "Haffner" (No. 35) and "Linz" (No. 36) Symphonies are superb. However, I have a special fondness for the delightful little Symphony No. 32. Although it lasts only about 13 minutes, it is a real gem - and you won't find a better performance of it than this one by Maag. If you like Mozart, you'll love this CD."

"This is a truly wonderful release. Peter Maag is a name that should be known to all Mozart fans. Mozart's music was among his strongest areas of specialisation (Mendelssohn's was another - this same label features Maag's recordings of Mendelssohn's symphonies 2-4 - superb!). For the "Arts" label, Maag recorded the last eleven Mozart symphonies (nos. 31-41), all of his performances shedding new light on these great masterpieces of classicism. On this same label there is also one of the finest available cycles of the Beethoven symphonies, again with Maag and his Italian colleagues. The orchestra, by the way, is wonderful (and Peter Maag was its chief conductor in the last years of his long and very distinguished career - you can hear proof of his loving attention to detail in every measure they play). A truly "classical" approach is evident throughout. It's worth getting to know the work of the orchestra of Venice and Padua in its own right as well - a very fine body of musicians indeed (particularly beautiful playing is evident from the winds): proof of the high standards now evident in Italy. But, Peter Maag is simply one of the very finest. I suggest that the listener do a search under his name and explore fully the extraordinary work of this fine Swiss conductor, who died only a couple of years ago. He should be as well known as Furtwangler (one of his mentors) or Toscanini. Perhaps one day, he will be. First rate digital recording as well. Five stars."
