"This is a bargain reissue of an excellent Mozart series begun with Abbado and the Berlin Phil. but abruptly cut short when the discs proved a financial flop (reportedly only 250 CDs sold in the U.S.) It's a shame that Abbado was trapped in the afterglow of Karajan; people couldn't yet see Berlin as his orchestra. Now in hidnsight, these performances of Sym. 28, 29, and 35 betoken the kind of change Abbado wanted to bring. They are scaled down in size, fleet, and elegant.
Abbado retains Karajan's virtuosity without the slick surface. HIs Mozart doesn't dig deep and could use a great deal more of Bruno Walter's relaxed affection for the music. What Abbado offers instead is impeccable phrasing, balance, and ensemble. These are like period instrument performances with far more sophisticated musicinaship.
Perhaps Abbado will seem too impersonal, but I found these to be exhilarating readings, and their effortless buoyancy went a long way to winning me over."
