CD Reviews

A very special recording
Larry VanDeSande | Mason, Michigan United States | 05/19/2008
(3 out of 5 stars)

"It's always good to see something exemplary come back into print, and this recording of Mozart's final three violin concertos is certainly exemplary. I owned this CD once before in this exact packaging, with Augustin Dumay playing Mozart's three most mature violin concertos while leading Camerata Academica Salzburg.

Dumay's playing (he is much more well known for his chamber than concerto work) is sparkling and the performances are, in spirit, tempo and execution, very much like Grumiaux's famous renderings with Davis on Philips. The timing of each movement is very similar in the concertos. Camerata Salzburg plays wonderfully and the whole thing is captured in DG's typical sound with generous upper registers and not too profound bass lines.

But, with competition like Pamela Frank Pamela Frank Plays Mozart: Violin Concertos Nos. 1-5/Haffner Serenade and Grumiaux Mozart: Violin Concertos giving you all five concertos and add-ons for about $10 new from Amazon vendors, you really must be committed. If so, this is an album to commit to -- Mozart's three mature concertos from an elegant player with backing from the Camerata from Wolfgang Amadeus's hometown."
