Synopsis
Product Description For his new record Struggle Hustle Love, Mr Ruff has enlisted the powerful production of the Unknown Prophets' Big Jess and DJ Willy Lose. Production also comes from Dialogue Elevaters own DJ Last Word. Other producers include King Otto, HiJack, and Poor Boy whose beat on the single "Apologize" will definitely make you bob your head. Other emcees appearing on this record are Random Thoughts, Noah B from Twisted Linguistics, Big Jess, and Mohs. Mr. Ruff has shared the stage with almost every emcee in the Twin Cities at one time or another, and can easily hold his own and keep the asses on the dance floor. Currently he's rapping up his debut album "Struggle, Hustle, Love" due to drop in May of '06. Also he's working on projects with DJ Willy Lose called "Dollar Beers" and a "ya better move your ass to this joint" EP with Poorboy. |
CD ReviewsA Struggle & Hustle to Respect & Love (4 stars) Alan Pounds | Minneapolis, MN | 04/03/2009 (4 out of 5 stars) "Mr. Ruff is originally from Wisconsin, but has been repping the St. Paul/Minneapolis scene since about 1997 with Random Thoughts (who appears on "Apologize") & DJ Espada of 7th St. Coincidence. 2006's "Struggle Hustle Love" is his debut solo album which enlists a number of excellent Minnesota hip-hop vets. Big Jess handles most of the productions duties here, with DJ Willy Lose on the cuts (both from my favorite local trio, Unknown Prophets). Other producers include the excellent DJ Last Word (Dialogue Eleveters Crew), King Otto, HiJack, and Poor Boy. Mr. Ruff is a very good emcee, and can come off rough & dark, but also inspiring and smooth. Lyrically, he wraps up a variety of issues pertaining to his struggle & hustle. And his love for the game is very apparent.
Personally, I find Mr. Ruff's more introspective material to be the high point of the album, despite having some very nice bangers. My favorite cut here is definitely "Soap Factory" featuring Big Jess - who rips an excellent guest verse. The whole track in a complete banger. Other favorites would include "Full Time" featuring Mazta I, "Take Me Away" featuring Tahira K., "Combo" featuring Poor Boy, "Take Down", & "Suicide" feat. Noah B.. Overall, a very good album and hopefully a sign of even better things to come from Mr. Ruff." |
