CD Reviews

Rap's Last Hope
Damien Nathan | Anywhere But Here | 01/22/2001

"Outkast is one of the few rap artists on a major label who feel compelled to experiment with unusual beats, samples, and rhymes. No one comes close to writing lyrics as poignent and smart as Dre's and Big Boi's. The result of their hard work: Stankonia, and it's second single, "Ms. Jackson". This is the best song on commercial radio. Forget "It Wasn't Me" or "Independent Women Part I", because "Ms. Jackson" maintains its credibility while entertaining. When Outkast could have taken a gangster rap turn in an effort to push album sales, they decided to give the public a song that was intelligent and thoughtful. Add a great B side (taken from the soundtrack to Any Given Sunday) and you've got a single that holds up better than most pop albums. Plus, that "Ms. Jackson" video is a work of art. A must."
Hey, this song is rather cool!

"Okay, everyone, get over it: I ordinarily don't care for music like BSB or 'N Sync or anything that gets overplayed on MTV like Sisqo, Sugar Ray, etc., or R&B or hip-hop, but this song is rather cool. I heard it on radio yesterday and was even singing along to the chorus, which goes: "I'm sorry, Ms. Jackson, I am for real," etc. Anyway, I liked the video, especially when the cat bounces his head up and down. One of the few music videos by artists I don't even listen to that's fun to watch. :)"
A rap song with an attitude

"Ms Jackson rocks! What a great song, I have to admit the lyrics and tune are still bouncing around inside my head and I keep smiling every time I think about the dogs and cat in the video who seem to be rapping along with the singers, for some reason this makes the song more poignant, and though I know that some of the words are meant to be serious, some sardonic, there is also an element of humour in this song, visual as well as verbal. Outkast certainly have done themselves justice with this single, I only wished they had included the video on the CD, as I would have loved to have played it on my computer. Go out an buy it, you won't regret it I promise you."
