Synopsis

Nanci Griffith has worn her success well. Along with Lyle Lovett, she has sold the most records of any Texas singer/songwriter, and she has done so on her own terms. Flyer is a jaunty, sometimes driving collection of original songs exploring the politics of the heart and featuring a number of effective guest artists, most notably members of the Counting Crows, Dire Straits, and even R.E.M. But Flyer remains central to her growing body of work for the songs, some of Griffith's most poetic and concise, moving at once beyond a purely Texas folk style and into folk-rock, and yet staying true to her narrative gifts. --Roy Kasten

CD Reviews

Can't live without it
First time mommy | 08/15/2005

"I actually bought this CD again to replace the first one that I lost in a move. I went a few months without this CD and found myself missing it, like an old friend. This is classic Nancy at her best. Well written, well produced, well done. "Flyer" gives me goosebumps every time I hear it and I listen to it frequently."
An enduring favorite

"I picked up this CD in a used record store around 1996. It immediately became a favorite, and it has stuck in that position since. "Flyer" would be one of my top ten "desert island selections." Nanci's voice is beautiful and wistful and poignant; the arrangements are detailed and perfect - every note there for a reason, every song a delicate little detailed sculpture. No song ever wears out its welcome or ends too soon. Wonderful, beautiful, intimate, heartfelt; I can't say enough good things about it. It's that good. Everyone should hear it."
Flyer is Nanci's masterpiece

"Every significant musical artist has one work that is their standout and for Nanci Griffith, Flyer is that standout work. I have been a Nanci fan since the late 1980's and loved her music. I loved it so much that I started a fan club for her, met someone through it and marry them. I only say this because Flyer was the c.d. that came out while we were beginning our relationship and perhaps that colors my view. Still even in bias this is a fantastic c.d. This Heart is one of the most joyous and fun songs you will ever hear. Time of Inconvenience is thought provoking and richly textured. Goodnight to a Mother's Dream and Talk to me while I'm Listening have some of the sweetest melodies that you have ever heard. The only song that I am not fond of on the whole c.d. is Going Back to Georgia which would be a fine song but Nanci's duet partner of Adam Duritz sounds like he is about to swallow his tongue at any moment. I'm not a fan. Nanci's most exquisite gift is her ability to write vivid lyrics that touch the heart and mind and this is where Flyer shows brightest even over Nanci's galaxy of other c.d. gems."
