NANCY WILSON 70'S SOULFUL MASTERPIECE!!
Bradly Briggs | TOLUCA LAKE, CALIFORNIA | 03/17/2004
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Pure bliss is this classic Nancy Wilson masterpiece...very limited release from her very prolific 1970's period have strangely not seen release on compact disc and for Nancy's younger audience (baby boomers not so young anymore!) these are her finest and made when Nancy was mature enough to know what she was doing in studio. Opening with a masterful take on Marvin Gaye's "Come Get To This", classic performance find Nancy at her playful and sensuous best making this yummy version definitive! Arrangements sparkle and cook with the session players giants such as Joe Sample, Ray Parker Jr., Ernie Watts with arrangements by Gene Page & Harry Bluestone concertmaster...doesn't get better than this and WoW, what results. Gene and Billy Page compose "All My Love Comes Down" providing their Diva with a great song that Nancy turns into a soulful tour-de-force...James Taylor's "Don't Let Me Be Lonely Tonight" is dramatic and stirring while Leon Ware's "If I Ever Lose This Heaven" is funky and soulful and should have been a major hit...where were radio programmers when this classic set was released? Gene and Billy Page compose the next two songs which are tailor made for Nancy's extraordinary dramatic and vocal abilities that are peak throughout this essential set. "Happy Tears" is dreamy and "Houdini Of The Midnite Hour" is the ultimate funk fest! Legendary composer Jimmy Webb's "This Time Last Summer" is Nancy's alone...nobody else could convey the sentiment, yearning and longing that Miss Wilson brilliantly expresses here. Legend Harlan Howard composed "He Called Me Baby" and this is is a soulful masterpiece and riveting vocal that is one of Nancy's very finest...production cooks from start to finish with great backgound vocals, hot guitar licks, a mean driving rhythm section and a passionate lead vocal surrounded by a glorious string section...Billy & Gene Page compose two killer closers and "Like A Circle Never Stops" is like the great ride at the Carnival that you don't want to end and "Boogeyin' All The Way" ends this wonderous collection on a funky note which shows that Nancy stretched out in the 70's and was brilliant doing it! Now if only Capitol would rise to the occasion & realize Nancy's best still have not been released on Compact Disc and would suggest starting with 1970's brilliant Gamble-Huff produced Philly classic "Now I'm A Woman", then the versatile classic "Kaleidoscope", awesome classic with the Jazz Crusaders "I Know I Love Him", the great "All Is Fair In Love", and the masterpiece "This Mother's Daughter"...all legendary works represent what this great singer is all about when she broke out of the limitations of doing old jazz standards which are great but not all their is to sing about...Hello Capitol, please correct this terrible oversight and get busy re-mastering! Bravo Nancy Wilson!"

"What a thrill to find this rare Nancy Wilson import! Never released in the U.S., this one will not be around for long. Nancy Wilson is a dazzling soulful jazz diva and is backed by gifted musicians. Gene Page masterfully arranged the songs in this album. "Don't Let Me Be Lonely Tonight" must have pleased James Taylor when he heard it for the first time. Her version is strong and gutsy. "If I Ever Lose This Heaven" is a smoldering number with a fully arranged production. "Houdini Of The Midnight Hour" is one of those songs that you can hit the repeat button over and over. In addition to Nancy's flawless vocal on this song, are strings, brass, and a cooking sax. solo. The finale, "Boogeyin' All The Way" is fine & funky. This CD is a must for all true Nancy Wilson fans. You will love it as much as I do!"
