THE ARTIST
Narciso Yepes was born on 14 November 1927 near Lorca in south-eastern Spain. He later moved with his family to Valencia, where he gave his first concert at the Teatro Serrano in 1944. Encouraged by Ataúlfo Argenta, one of Spains most eminent conductors, he relocated to Madrid in 1946 and was introduced to Joaquín Rodrigo the year after. On 16 December 1947 he performed Concierto de Aranjuez in Madrid in the presence of the composer, who commented, The music, as I imagined it.

During the 1950s and 1960s he developed an international career, including a first tour of South America (1957), his Japanese debut (1960) and his first appearance in the USA (1964).

From 1963 onwards Narciso Yepes performed on a 10-string guitar which he had developed in collaboration with the renowned guitar maker Jose Ramírez of Madrid. The new instrument allowed the guitarist to play a wider range of Renaissance and Baroque music and to achieve a more balanced sound in all registers. It has an intensity which can fill a room and permits great virtuosity.

Yepes performed his final recital on 1 March 1996 and died in Murcia on 3 May 1997 after a long battle with illness.
